PETER Thackeray asks (July 21) Do the people of Evesham want a cinema?

I remember as a lad around 1950 travelling on Percy Russell's bus from Aston Somerville to Evesham on Saturday nights to the Clifton (in the High Street) and the Regal (in Port Street) to watch such delightful black and white films as King Kong, Tarzan, Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, the Marx Brothers, Roy Rogers and his side-kick Gabby Hayes, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, and many many more, Once, we pupils from Prince Henry's Grammar School went one afternoon to see Hamlet starring Laurence Olivier. I still recall how scary the ghost on the battlements was.
