A BRASS band that performed for an Olympic legend will take to the stage in a Kidderminster park on Sunday.

Malvern Hills District Brass Band, which was founded 25 years ago, will be playing from 2.30pm until 4.30pm.

This summer, the musicians, conducted by Nigel Hall, have entertained crowds at events in Worcester, Droitwich and Evesham with a range of music to suit all tastes.

Light classical music, traditional brass band and modern pop songs will be performed by the group, which is taking part in the event for the first time in several years.

It is currently graded in the Third Section in the National League tables and has played to audiences at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The musicians have successfully competed in local brass band contests and have also qualified for the National Brass Band Championships, finishing sixth in 2000.

Last year, the band performed a specially written piece of music for five times Olympic rowing gold medallist, Sir Steve Redgrave.

Every Sunday, until the end of August, visitors to the park will be able to enjoy free outdoor concerts, organised by Wyre Forest District Council's events section.

Last weekend, wet weather forced organisers to cancel a performance by The Whiskey Bandits who were opening the Bands in the Park concert series in Brinton Park.

A spokesman for the events section said: "Unfortunately, we had to cancel but we will continue with the rest of the programme."

Future performers include The Steve King Band, which will be playing music from the big band era on August 7, Shirley Brass Band on August 14, who will be followed by Bell Inn Brass Band on August 21 and rock 'n' roll band Breeze on August 28. Visitors are advised to take deckchairs and a picnic.
