An exhibition of paintings and prints by Wellington-based artist Richard Bavin is under way at Brockhampton's Apple Store Gallery.
The theme of the exhibition is taken from a series of walks around the village where he lives, evoking the magic and mystery of the landscape, both in the day and at night.
"Walking alone energises and restores me, both physically and spiritually," Richard said.
"What I see on any one day influences how I feel."
Richard's current project is based on a 12-mile circular route from his front door, which takes in native woodland, farms, villages and the river Lugg.
He has a particular passion for autumn and winter walking, when the bones of the landscape are revealed and the colours take on a rich palette of warm ochres and browns, cool blues and greens.
He carries a range of art materials, including sketchbooks, oil boards and watercolours, to record what he sees.
Back in his studio Richard has been using these records to develop finished works, striving to capture those unexpected moments of magical beauty - the flash of a passing kingfisher, a twilight sky or moonlight filtering through dense woods.
"At the outset of the project I envisaged working towards a final series of paintings which would somehow sum up these walking experiences," he said.
"In practice, my attention was repeatedly caught up with fleeting moments of surprise or wonder."
Richard will be in situ in the gallery next Wednesday and, on August 13, is due to run a landscape painting workshop in Brockhampton.
