ST Paul's Cathedral, which became an inspiration to many during the Second World War, took centre stage on a special End of the War miniature sheet, issued on July 5.

Royal Mail chose the St Paul's Cathedral stamp from the 1995 Peace and Freedom issue - depicting the cathedral illuminated by giant war-time spotlights - as part of a special miniature sheet which also contains five first class definitives.

The sheet celebrates the 60th anniversary of the end of hostilities and the end of the Second World War.

Julietta Edgar, head of special stamps at Royal Mail, said: "We could think of no more appropriate image to represent the outbreak of hostilities than the iconic image of wartime St Paul's Cathedral."
