Theatre review - You Never Can Tell, Festival Theatre, Malvern (until Saturday)

DELIGHTFUL in parts, dull at times and definitely dated, but nevertheless this is still an enjoyable night out.

It's a classic comedy with Bernard Shaw's witty observations on marriage, the generation gap and more pertinently, the battle of the sexes in Edwardian times.

Quite predictable in many respects, but considering its age Shaw's script still wrings out plenty of amusing moments and also retains the capability of making you think.

Stage and film veteran Edward Fox leads a fine cast, including Diana Quick (Mrs Clandon) who starred in the classic tv mini-series Brideshead Revisited.

The stage literally lights up when Fox is on stage as the sage old seaside waiter, as it also does when Sinead Matthews appears as the mischievous Dolly, the cute and bouncy daughter of Mrs Clandon.

I'm sure we'll see and hear more of Ms Matthews in years to come. AW
