Every woman is a winner in a unique race for which the only prize is life. Zeena Lemon will be among the thousands putting on their running shoes this month

On Sunday, June 11, at 11am. I and thousands of other women will meet on Worcester's Pitchcroft racecourse to take part in Cancer Research UK's Race For Life.

By running or walking the 5km around the racecourse and city centre we will raise cash for the world's largest independent cancer researcher.

Throughout the summer, at 230 venues across the UK, an anticipated 750,000 women will participate in the UK's biggest fund-raising event. Last year, a staggering £32m was collected and this year it is hoped £46m will be raised. Not bad for an event that started out in 1994 with 680 participants and amassed £36,000. To date the Race For Life has raised more than £100m and every penny of that has been used to fund Cancer Research UK's pioneering work to prevent, treat and cure the biggest single cause of death in the UK.

The experience itself is memorable. Running the 3.1 miles in 2004 was one of my biggest achievements and many taking part will be there to achieve personal goals as well as raise money.

The atmosphere on the day is fantastic. The race breathes life into the city as thousands of people line the streets to encourage all the runners and walkers. Race For Life encourages people of all fitness levels to join in and experience a sense of achievement.

So if someone you know asks you to sponsor them for Race For Life, give generously and come and watch on the day to help us all celebrate life.
