Edgbaston High School for Girls is the oldest independent school for girls in Birmingham, educating over 900 girls between the ages of two-and-a-half and 18. Yet in the next few months the life of the school will undergo a significant change with the arrival of a new headmistress, Dr Ruth Weeks, who will take over at the helm after Miss Elizabeth Mullenger retires in the summer.

A new headmistress is always a turning point in the life of a school like EHS and staff and girls are looking forward with excitement and curiosity to Dr Weeks joining the school. She grew up in Sutton Coldfield and attended the University of Birmingham to study for both her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the field of chemistry. She is currently head of Redland High School for Girls in Bristol where she still finds time to teach chemistry, a commitment she is resolved to make to EHS.

One of the first opportunities for parents and girls to meet Dr Weeks will occur later this month when the Senior School holds one of its regular Open Events for prospective parents and pupils on Tuesday June 27 at 4.30pm. For those West Midlands families thinking ahead to Year 7 entry in September 2007, this is the perfect opportunity to see the facilities, browse the displays, meet teaching staff and have a tour conducted by one of the girls.

Senior School also welcomes enquiries from parents interested in their daughter joining the school in Years 8-10 (subject to the availability of places) and girls interested in joining the Sixth Form will always be considered subject to their grades at GCSE.

Dr Weeks will speak to parents at 6pm on June 27 and, together with other staff and the head girl, will be available to take questions and enquiries throughout the evening. The school offers academic and music scholarships at 11+ and 16+ and also sports scholarships at 16+ - for further information or a school prospectus please contact Marketing and Admissions on 0121 454 5831.
