Is your skin blooming into summer or are there still signs of the 'post-winter blues'?

Seasonal influences should never be overlooked - during the winter, central heating saps moisture and extreme weather causes sensitivity, while the summer sun also has a detrimental effect on the skin. Regular application of SPF creams is essential, but using an oil-based preparation on the face can cause a build up of dead skin and grease. Whatever the weather, your skin deserves some tlc.

Exfoliation is the first step but this must be done with care. Abrasive scrubs and creams containing granules are suitable for most skin types, and should be massaged gently into the skin two to three times weekly. Biological action products with AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) vary in strength dramatically, and the mildest products can be used on all skins to digest dead cells gently from the surface epidermis.

Professional exfoliation treatments are available in beauty therapy centres and are adapted to the skin condition. The use of micro-dermabrasion may also be offered, whereby fine crystals are jetted onto the skin providing a more intense action.

Once the epidermis has been cleared of dead cells, re-nourishment can begin. Ingredients to look for include Vitamin A or Retinol, DNA and amino-acid compounds, all of which are excellent for renewal and suppleness, whilst vitamin C and zinc aid healing and slow the ageing process by preventing oxygen shortage. Camomile, lavender and aloe vera are healing, calming and soothing.

All preparations used during the day should have an SPF of at least 15, preferably higher during the summer months, and should be specifically designed for use on the more delicate facial skin.

Finally, if in doubt, seek professional advice from a specialist to ensure your skin does not suffer mistreatment and benefits fully from your product purchase or treatment choice. With the appropriate care, your skin will blossom come rain or shine!
