Since 2003, a group of gardens opened to the public under the National Gardens Scheme has raised more than £4,000 for charity. Marlbrook Gardens in Bromsgrove, formerly known as Braces Lane Gardens, was set up by neighbours who felt their lovingly-maintained green space could be of interest to others.

At 24 Braces Lane, in the steeply-inclined garden of Alan and Lynn Nokes, a range of exotic plants is on display, giving a Mediterranean feel. Other special features include a sweeping lawn with plenty of well-stocked herbaceous borders, a vegetable patch, a wildlife pond and a large pool stocked with carp.

The 'Saranacris' garden at 28a Braces Lane is owned by John and Janet Morgan, who have developed this former sand quarry into a classic 'rooms' style, making clever use of the changes in level. Water features include ponds, waterfalls and a stream, while John's passion for collecting plants has led to many unusual species such as alstroemeria and kniphofia, plus bananas, palms and bougainvillea. A roof garden affords panoramic views.

Last year the Morgans' garden was featured in Amateur Gardening and the Nokes' in Gardening News.

This year a third garden has been added, hence the change of name - just five minutes' walk away at 504 Birmingham Road, John's brother David and his wife Dianne have opened their plantsman's cottage garden. Providing yet another contrast, it features a secluded patio, well-stocked borders, a wildlife pond and some enticingly hidden corners to discover.

Marlbrook Gardens will be open on Thursday, July 20, from 1-5pm, and Sunday, August 20, from 2-6pm, with plants and homemade teas on sale. Combined admission to the three gardens is £4 per person (children free) - all proceeds to NGS and the County Air Ambulance.
