A FORMER Kidderminster College student will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Oscar-winning actor Robert Redford when he jets off to study at a Hollywood drama school.

Robert Beddall, how lives in Wychbold, has been offered a place at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles, where he will study for an associated arts degree.

The 21-year-old, who completed a BTEC national diploma in performing arts, will fly out in August to attend the academy which taught both Redford and Oscar-nominated actress Lauren Bacall.

Robert, who has spent the past year touring with the Bite Size Theatre Company, recently in the role of Banquo in Macbeth, auditioned in London several months ago.

He had to recite two monologues and said: "I coudn't believe my luck when I got the call to say that I'd been accepted. I saw an advert in The Stage and I thought I might as well have a go."

Robert says it will be a fantastic opportunity for him and he can't wait to go.

"It should be really good fun and, hopefully, challenging as well. I want to keep busy and try everything I can," he said.

"I'm really looking forward to meeting new people and seeing what the American approach to acting is like."

Robert said he has always wanted to be an actor and his dream role when he is older would be to play Fagin in the musical Oliver!

"I love the musical and I think it would be a great character to play," he said.

During his first year placement in Los Angeles, Robert will focus on basic acting techniques and movement, in addition to studying plays and perfecting the art of fencing, which helps with stage combat and posture.
