Following the unexpected and radical changes to UK inheritance tax laws announced in the recent budget, the Law Society is advising that anyone with assets in excess of £285,000 should review their will as soon as possible, or their families risk facing a huge tax bill.

According to the president of the Law Society, the changes have been rushed through by the government and could mean that millions of ordinary people are caught out before they have a chance to make provision for the future.

The proposals may cause hardship by bringing in new tax charges for spouses where assets are left in almost any sort of trust arrangement, including trusts created automatically when people die without leaving a will. They will put assets in the hands of people too young or too vulnerable to manage them sensibly, and they could also affect life insurance policies.

The Law Society recommends that all divorced parents, and children with court orders establishing trusts in their favour, should seek immediate guidance from a solicitor, who can explain the often-complex legal jargon and provide advice about how to look after your assets.

Gareth Thompson, of DWT Legal, points out: "In the rush and stress of everyday life, it is all too easy to forget about planning for the future. But whatever your age, there are certain things you should be doing to protect your assets from losing value or falling into the wrong hands. Let us help you to keep more of your money!"
