Prettiness is the buzzword for this spring's beauty trends. Forget last season's vampish look - we're looking ahead to a more fresh-faced and feminine style.

"We're not trying to reinvent the wheel this season - we just want to make girls look gorgeous and feminine," says MAC make-up artist Gordon Espinet.

"The new naked face is indefinably made up but still very 'done'." Don't think you can simply leave the house without any make-up on. As with all looks, this one needs to be perfected.

Working out where to highlight and contour with concealer, base and powder is the tricky part and rarely is foundation smoothed over the whole face - just where it's needed. Keep eyes simple and mascara-less, brows groomed, cheeks with a tiny amount of neutral blusher and natural-coloured lips.

In terms of faces that have a focus on one feature, it's all about eyes. Golden girls may prefer subtle gold shimmery eyes, while rock chicks can apply lashings of dark eyeliner or white eyeshadow - the season's hottest shade.

Be careful how you apply that white eyeshadow. Gordon suggests using pencil in the rim to brighten the whites of your eye. Try an off-white shade or even an ice-blue pencil.

Take tips from supermodels such as Linda Evangelista and opt for a groomed face. "You'll need a highlight on the top of the cheekbone, contoured temples, cheekbones and jawline," says Gordon. "Eyes are light on the browbone, medium in the crease, dark on the outer corners, always with a curled and mascara-ed lash and streamlined brows."The mouth must be lightest in the centre and slightly deeper around the Cupid's bow and outer corners."

Pink is on everyone's lips and cheeks. Break the rules by applying powder blusher with your fingers for a more natural look or use a blush stick, a cream version or even a tint.

Place dots on the apples of your cheeks and rub in for a subtle flush.
