Fewer things give children more self-confidence than an ability to look after themselves.

That is where Young Gloves, a karate club for children, can help.

"Our aim is to produce students with the right attitude towards sport and everyday life," says Young Gloves senior instructor, Justin Thomas.

"Many students come to Young Gloves Karate having being bullied or with special needs. Or they are just sensitive children lacking a little confidence."

Young Gloves Karate Schools offer a safe, friendly environment to train in and the best coaching skills. They teach the Wado Ryu style, a traditional Japanese martial art.

All classes have a maximum of 25 students per session and although it is a sport and students are encouraged to progress through the grading system, the main aim is to develop self-discipline and self-esteem.

"Students are taught to control themselves and to always think of how their actions can affect others," says Justin. And it is no fad. "We're not a kick boxing club or anything to do with gimmicks," he adds.

Young Gloves has Wyre Forest covered with clubs at schools in Kidderminster, Stourport, Bewdley, Cookley and Sytchampton with Saturday sessions at Forest Glades Leisure Centre and St Ambrose Parish Hall in Kidderminster and Stourport Sports Centre.

Although primarily aimed at children, there is a special adult class held at Sutton Park First School on Tuesday evenings.

Last year, the clubs raised £1,540 for the Children in Need appeal.

New students are issued with a licence and, after four weeks of training, can become a full member of the Young Gloves karate club and affiliated to the BTKA, (British Traditional Karate Association) and the English Karate Governing Body.

"The instructors aim to instill confidence in all students, giving them self belief, to be able to stand up to bullying and to be competent karateka," says sensei (a Japanese word for 'master') Justin, who has been a qualified instructor for ten years.

"Through the grading process and intelligent coaching practices, students can become excellent karateka and face up to life's challenges."

Young Gloves sell a range of karate clothing and sparring equipment.
