It takes two to make a wedding, of course - so whether it's top hat and tails or a crisp modern suit, the man of the moment must make sure he looks worthy to wed his beautiful bride.

He may often fade into the background next to his bride, but it is up to the groom to make sure he and his male retinue are immaculately turned out.

If the wedding is to be very formal and morning suits, or kilts, are required, the groom must be prepared to arrange for the hire and delivery of sufficient suits for himself, the best man and ushers, and he usually pays all hire charges. If, however, his retinue decide to buy or have their suits made, each man is responsible for his own outfit.

However, that's by no means the end of the groom's responsibilities. He must also:

* Book the venue and arrange to meet the officiator.

* Pay all the official fees attached to the marriage, including church and clergyman's fees, plus the costs of choir, organist, bell ringers and any other officials, and bouquets and corsages.

* Provide all the information and legal documentation for the marriage application to be accepted.

* Appoint his best man and ushers.

* Pay for the engagement and bride's wedding ring.

* Make a speech at the reception which he should write himself.

* Present the bridesmaids and other attendants, ushers and best man with small gifts of appreciation for their attendance.

* Organise and pay for the honeymoon.
