Christmas morning may bring excitement and presents, but Christmas afternoon often means family rows and falling asleep in front of the telly. So, to stop the day fizzling out, you need to get everyone playing a few games.

While we can't promise that an afternoon of game-playing is guaranteed to stop all arguments - it should at least ensure a memorable day spent together.

CEREAL BOX GAME Take an empty cereal box and get each player to pick up the box from the floor while they remain standing, using their teeth and without touching the ground with their hands. After each round cut an inch off the box. Any player who falls over or whose hands touch the ground is out. Keep going until there's just one player left - the winner - or there's no box left to cut.

SARDINES One player is nominated to hide in the house. The other players must then split up to look for him/her. Anyone who finds the hiding player must then join them - so they're squashed together like sardines. Everyone has to shout "sardines" at the last person to find the hiding place and they become the "hider" next time round.

CLUEDO You may have played it as a kid but a good murder mystery game never becomes dated. The latest edition of Cluedo includes previously unknown details about the game's characters. Spend Christmas afternoon uncovering who really did kill Dr Black.

THE HAT GAME Divide everyone into two teams and give each player five pieces of paper. Each player writes the name of a well-known person on each paper then folds them up and puts them in the hat. Give the hat a good stir and one player from one team is given the hat and has 30 seconds to describe as many names in the hat as possible to their team-mates. Then the hat swaps to the opposing team. The process continues until all the names have been guessed.

Pass the Orange Compete to be the first team to pass an orange up and down a row of members using only their feet. Sit beside each other, facing the other team The first player holds an orange between his/her feet and passes to next member, who accepts only with the feet. This continues until orange is dropped. The person who drops it must pick it up, no matter where it's rolled, by using their feet only. When the orange is collected it's returned to the first player for game to begin again.

In the manner of the word One leaves room and others choose an adverb such as greedily, shyly, happily, apprehensively. The other player is then asked back to guess what the adverb is. The other players have to answer questions in the manner of the chosen adverb. The questioner can also ask the others to carry out an activity in the manner of the word too, such as peeling a banana. If they guess right they can score a point. If they don't guess, the turn moves to someone else but no point is scored.
