Loveable green ogre Shrek will light up Stourbridge town centre when he switches on this year's Christmas lights.

The popular animated movie character will do the honours at the town's official switch-on ceremony on Saturday December 8.

Town centre manager Matt Caddick said: "Our aim is to draw families into the town centre.

"We know that Shrek is popular with both parents and children alike."

As well as the switch-on at 4.45pm, DJs from Beacon FM will entertain shoppers throughout the day, and the town's annual Christmas Market is taking place again.

However, the much-missed festive firework finale won't be making a comeback, after being cancelled over health and safety concerns last year.

Mr Caddick said: "Unfortunately we can't deliver it safely within the town centre, but we're looking into an alternative finale, which I can't reveal yet, but should be just as good as the firework display."

The Christmas lights also promise to be the town's best yet.

Mr Caddick said: "We constantly try to improve the display each year. Stourbridge Christmas lights are already considered quite a comprehensive scheme. This year there will be just as many lights as last year, and hopefully a few more."
