THE responses to our complaints regarding Transco's pipe replacement project in Sidbury and Friar Street have been quite extraordinary.

Operations will now be confined to Friar Street during the Three Choirs Festival.

Naturally, visitors would not wish to go there and the businesses are small, locally-owned and have no clout. The city council seems to think that this is yet another attempt to reduce rates liability. These people are always finding fresh ways of not paying.

I feel that the three questions I posed have yet to be answered. Why, if the work is now urgent, were the pipes not replaced when the road was up for months on end so very recently?

Why was work planned to coincide with the city's most important cultural festival? Why did they pretend to have consulted local businesses and residents?

You have pondered in your columns why Worcester has such a poor image to visitors and tourists. There is no need to look any further.

DAVID BIRTWHISTLE,

n WITH reference to your article on Worcestershire Royal A&E figures, I must congratulate the Trust for achieving its target in April.

However, does everyone realise how many people had to go without a planned operation for the Trust to achieve that target?

My mother was one of those people who had a planned day surgery cancelled on April 27 because the "day beds" had all been taken for these A&E patients.

Her operation was for cancer investigations. She may get another appointment on July 24 (if it is not cancelled again). I am worried because three months in the life of a cancer sufferer could prove fatal. I wonder how many A&E patients admitted in April were from self inflicted drink and drugs problems?

Yes - treat them by all means - but if they are back again to A&E, then make them wait.

My mother is more important to me than they are. I remember reading in your paper in April about another gentleman whose operation was cancelled.

It would be interesting if your paper could find out how many planned operations were cancelled in April, due to so many admittances from A&E.

G POSTANS (Mrs),
