WORCESTERSHIRE FA referees have played their cards right with a series of notable promotions.

Pride of place has gone to Worcester's Steve Dorr who will be in the middle on the Coca-Cola League next season.

But James Cox, of Evesham, is joining him at the same level as an assistant referee and Bromsgrove's Ian Scarr will hold the whistle on the Nationwide Conference.

The success continues with Neil Radford, of Worcester, going from an assistant to referee on the contributory leagues list.

Richard Field, John Harris, Dave Selby and Paul Tyler will take his place as assistant referees.

They will also take charge of Midland Combination and West Midlands League Premier Division matches across the region.

New Conference man Scarr also has plenty of playing experience after being a semi-professional goalkeeper for Halesowen Town and Dudley Town.

Cox has shown plenty of dedication to reach a high standard, despite being a late starter to officiating after playing football into his early 30s.

Tyler, in his late 30s, started refereeing local games two years ago after playing in the same leagues and has now reached a higher standard. The youngest of the promoted officials, Radford, played local league football and, provided he can continue with good performances, could eclipse the other three.

A Worcestershire FA spokesman said the promotions prove it is never too early or late to take up refereeing.

They are encouraging players near the end of their careers or those who have been unable to reach a high standard to take the plunge.
