Ralph Madden and his colleagues from Malvern Town Council are to be congratulated for their fantastic efforts in raising £936 for the British Heart Foundation and £1,057 for Malvern Friends of the Elderly.

The British Heart Foundation is playing a leading role in the fight against disease of the heart and circulation, so that it is no longer a major cause of disability and premature death.

More than 50 per cent of the foundations funds is spent on research into developing new surgical techniques and medicines. It has only been possible to develop many of the medicines and treatments for heart problems through research funded by the BHF.

In the United Kingdom, someone has a heart attack every two minutes. About half of these are fatal. In an attempt to reduce some of the premature deaths from heart attacks in the Malvern area, the BHF has recently donated several defibrillators to local GP's surgeries and has given over £2,500 to both Malvern secondary schools to help teach pupils what to do if they come across someone suffering a life-threatening emergency.

On behalf of the Malvern Branch of the British Heart Foundation, I would like to say a heart-felt thank you to everyone who helped and supported Malvern Town Council in raising such a fantastic sum of money.
