MERVYN Needham was the guest speaker on May 18, talking about "Footsteps in the Andes".

He commenced by showing a map of South America and outlined the trip he and his party, with guides, took on a recent holiday.

He pointed out the main road through the Andes to Valparaiso, which all trucks must take with their goods for shipment to the Far East.

Mr Needham continued with slides of his route from Buenos Aires to Mendoza, saying how vital the rain falling off the Andes into the Mendoza River is for Chile's wine-growing.

He also went to the Atacama Desert, where it never rains. The party took a six-day trek finishing at Iruya after a total of 19 days.
