A man who mounted an attack with an iron bar in an Evesham street has been jailed for four months.

Christopher Hagen hit Darren Poole on the head after an argument blew up over a debt, Worcester Crown Court heard last week.

When police got to the scene on June 17 last year at the junction between Port Street and Castle Street, both men and Poole's brother Sean were rolling on the ground fighting.

Hagen, aged 30, of King's Street, Evesham, and Darren Poole, 32, of Temple Mews, Littleworth Street, Evesham, pleaded guilty to a charge of public disorder.

Jailing Hagen, Judge Michael Mott dismissed his claim that he had acted in self defence and said he deliberately armed himself.

The judge fined Poole £200 and issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Sean Poole, 31, of Cathedral Avenue, Kidderminster, after he failed to attend court for sentence.

His barrister Deni Matthews said a solicitor's letter informing him of a date change might have gone astray.

Prosecutor Nigel Hall said Hagen's case was that he was attacked in the street over the money debt.

He grabbed the bar - a dumbell used for weight lifting - because he feared for his own safety. After using it, he dumped the bar in a litter bin.

Darren Poole had drunk two and a half litres of cider and two pints of lager before getting involved.

He sustained a cut to the back of his head.

Hagen had previous convictions for burglary and Poole for criminal damage.
