A 28-year-old woman was hit on the back of the head with large stereo speakers when her car crashed on the A38 in Droitwich.
The incident happened yesterday afternoon at 3.40pm when her blue VW Golf Ryder hit a bridge on the road and veered onto the central reservation.
She was flown by air ambulance to Selly Oak hospital with severe head injuries where her condition was this morning said to be critical, but stable. It is thought her injuries were caused by speakers in the back of the car flying forward on impact.
Police have said they are unsure how the incident happened and are appealing for witnesses.
"The L-registered VW was left on the central reservation and no other vehicle seems to have been involved," said a force spokesman.
"The young woman who was hurt is from the Gloucestershire area."
