A WYTHALL grandfather who was too ill to collect his degree certificate was rewarded for his efforts with a special ceremony - at his home.
Paul Southwick, 72, had been studying Integrated Studies for almost seven years at Birmingham University when he developed severe heart problems and was unable to attend the presentation ceremony.
But university chiefs were determined he would not lose out - and donned their caps and gowns for a unique ceremony held at Silvermead Court.
Fellow students and friends also came along to share in Mr Southwick's success.
University lecturer Peter Leather said: "It was the least we could do for Paul, who was a very popular student and instrumental in departmental changes while he was studying.''
Mr Southwick, a former economics teacher, said he had enjoyed his studies but was looking forward to spending more time with his three children and three grandchildren.
