A GROUP of NHS workers are running the annual Race for Life this Sunday to raise money for cancer research and "have some fun".

Calling themselves the NHS Nutters, 11 of the 16-strong team work in health records for the Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust, based at Worcestershire Royal Hospital. The other team members are friends and family.

Dressed in "wacky" outfits, they will pound Worcester's streets in the hope of raising about £500 for Cancer Research UK, which organises the female-only race.

"We were just talking about it a few months ago and we thought we'd enter it," said Claire Young, who ran the race in 2001 with her mother, Sue Young, and another member of the team, Deena Smith.

Miss Young, aged 28, said there was "not a lot" of training going on.

"Some people have been walking to work but we just thought we'd enter it for a bit of fun, and to raise money for Cancer Research UK."

The team, which ranges in ages from 13 to "late 50s" will wear T-shirts they have written on themselves, wigs, fairy outfits and head dresses.

"Anything crazy!" said Miss Young.

The fifth annual Race for Life will start at 11am on Worcester racecourse this Sunday, June 15.
