FITNESS fanatics in Droitwich Spa are set to receive a boost to their exercise regimes with a £500,000 improvement plan for facilities at the town's leisure centre.

The gym at the Briar Mill centre will be expanded, a large dance studio will be created and the reception area and car park will also be revamped.

Members approved the plans at Wychavon District Council's Executive Board meeting last week.

Councillor Paul Middlebrough (Con-Drakes Broughton), who has responsibility for leisure services, said: "Wychavon is pleased to make another investment to improve and extend affordable leisure facilities as part of its commitment to encouraging healthier communities."

He added: "The package will not only provide a better service for existing customers but it will also attract more people to use the fitness facility."

At the meeting the board also requested that detailed proposals for a learner pool at Droitwich Spa Leisure Centre are brought forward for consideration in October, so work can start as soon as possible.

Cllr Middlebrough added: "Wychavon's board firmly believes that all children should be able to swim and a new learner pool will greatly improve opportunities for them to learn."

The work is expected to be completed by Christmas so Spa folk wanting to get fit for the new year can take full advantage of the improvements.
