A BARNT Green footballer has called on members of the public to come forward with information to help police find the driver of a car which left him lying in agony on the road last week.

Daniel Wilkes, aged 17, was left sprawling helplessly in Stratford Road with a broken ankle during the afternoon of May 25 after a black car hit him and fled the scene.

So far no witnesses have come forward to help Bromsgrove police's investigation, but Daniel is hoping that somebody with vital information will help track down the driver.

"There were plenty of people around when the car hit me, but no one seems to have seen anything. If anyone has any information about what happened it may help find who did this to me."

The NEW College student, who plays for Bromsgrove Rovers' youth team, had been crossing Stratford Road by the junction with Windsor Street at around 1pm when the incident took place.

"It's all a bit of a blur really. I saw the car coming in the distance and all of a sudden it just hit me," he said.

"I remember the car's back wheel going over my leg and being left in agony on the road. Luckily for me my friend was there to call the ambulance."

The injury, which is expected to take more than two months to heal, could not have come at a worse time for the enthusiastic sports fan.

Daniel will not be fit in time for the start of the 2005/2006 football season, while his injury could affect the sports diploma he is studying in Redditch.

"I have practical exams coming up, so this couldn't have come at a worst time for my course. There's also no way I'm going to make it back to full fitness for the start of the football season and that's really hurt me."

Bromsgrove police are also eager to find the driver of the black hatchback which collided with Daniel.

PC Mikes Roberts said: "Our investigations into this incident are continuing and as part of this we need to identify the driver and car involved in the collision.

"The car has been described as a black hatchback and we are appealing to the driver to come forward."

Anyone with information is asked to call Bromsgrove police on 08457 444888.
