WYRE Forest Cycle Racing Club's promising junior rider Pete Banham rode superbly in the Welsh road race championships.

He finished fourth fastest junior and 13th overall in the race for junior third and fourth category riders over a 100km course at Llanelli.

Steve Burns returned to racing last week after a three-week absence through illness and finished sixth overall in the Wrekinsport 10-mile time trial on a windy Newport course on Saturday. He recorded 22 minutes 35 seconds.

Next to complete the course was Bewdley's Kris Doms, who raced a season's best time of 23-04 to take second in the B category. Andy Convery smashed his personal best time by more than two minutes, to win group D in 23-57.

In the regional road race championships, Dave Barnes finished 12th overall in the elite first and second category race over a tough 125km course, comprising five laps of the 215k Clows Top-Newnham Bridge-Abberley circuit.

In the third and fourth category championship race at Alcester, Paul Prince broke away on the final lap with Ben Dale of Climb on Bikes, but the pair were caught by the chasing bunch with one kilometre to go.

Prince had to settle for eighth overall, while Elliott Dinsdale, suffering from a cold, finished 29th out of 42 finishers.

Dave Wood raced to victory in round four of the club's time trial competition on the 14-mile course around Astl-ey. He powered around the undulating circuit to record a time of 36-02, and was followed by John Parker in second in 36-17, and Doms third in 37-04.

Other times were: Con-very 37-07, Gary Bartram 37-39, Joe Rowe 38-38, Karl Davies 38-51, James Smith 40-06, Brian Clarke 40-30, Jonathon Higgins 41-40, Chris Edmonds 43-46, Mike Clackson 44-04, Steve Clews 44-45, Ruth Finney 45-23, Sue Middup-Jones 48-57, Sally Clews 58-51. Phil and Ruth Blacker recorded 37-51 on their tandem.
