A £1million sports development in Batchley suffered a set back following a suspected arson attack in the early hours of Monday morning.

Fire ravaged a fence and a shed at the Redditch Cricket, Hockey and Rugby Club, quickly spreading to the back of the clubhouse.

Redditch firefighters were called out at 12.20am and managed to stop the blaze from doing further damage to the clubhouse.

Fire station manager Ian Prust said: "It can be said the fire was probably started in suspicious circumstances."

The Bromsgrove Road club netted a £1million grant from the lottery's Sport England and New Opportunities Fund earlier this year.

The money will be used to transform the club into a premier sports facility, complete with state of the art rugby and hockey pitches and new cricket practice wickets.

Work is scheduled for completion early next year.

No one from the club was available for comment at the time the Advertiser went to press.
