BEWDLEY emerged pointless from their losing draw with Division One leaders Kington after entering the match with a depleted attack.

Andy Hartley and Simon Smith dropped both the visitors' openers early on with the batsmen going on to score half centuries at a rate of three an over.

The Bewdley bowling and fielding became increasingly untidy as Kington rattled along at eight an over. Jon Boult was the pick of the bowling with 2-90.

In reply, Boult and Matt Boden put on a 52-run opening partnership, but Boden set the trend for rashness in the order when his innings ended after trying to take e tried to take a non-existent run.

Martin Flack at number six steadied the innings with a responsible 38no to help Bewdley towards three batting points.

In Division One on Monday, Bewdley were beaten by Stourbridge by seven wickets, and only took four points to their opponents' 20.

Stourbridge won the toss and asked Bewdley to bat. Boult and Boden began well, gradually amassing a 79-run opening stand before Boden was caught and bowled for 27. Simon Mauger (19) joined Boult (71) for another half-century stand and at 134-1 they seemed well placed if a little behind the clock. In trying to accelerate wickets fell with increasing regularity and the final score was 178-9.

Stourbridge started slowly, and Tom Bayliss had an early success with an lbw appeal. Eventually R Bradley began to move the score along until bowled by Mauger (2-66) for 40 at 65. This only brought D Mehan to join O Hill and they steadily accumulated runs.

Despite Stourbridge starting slowly and Tom Bayliss and Mauger taking early wickets, Bewdley's depleted attack was not helped by over-throws and other fielding errors, and their opponents reached the target in the 46th over.

l Bewdley seconds beat Kington by six wickets. Scott Fowler was intstrumental as they restricted their Kington to 184.

In reply Bewdley lost Andy Robinson early before father and son David and Ben Jones scored 24 and 21 respectively.

After three wickets went quickly, David Meek and Mike Harris steadied the ship before hitting out to lead Bewdley to victory.

Bewdley took seven points from their losing draw with Stourbridge who set them a total of 244-5 to chase.

Robinson and captain D Jones started the run chase until the former was out for 21. Meek (26) joined Jones (61) for a half-century stand for the third wicket.

Dean Wilkes steered Bewdley home to three batting points, but losing wickets in the final over prevented the fourth being gained.

l Peter Mauger was man-of-the-match when the Bewdley Cavaliers beat Belbroughton thirds by 25 runs in their Division Seven match.

Opening the batting, he lost two partners before being joined by Derek Moses at 20-2. Together they added 88 before the innings crumpled to 158, Mauger having scored 47, Moses 44.

When the home team looked threatening, Mauger changed the game with accurate medium pace, to take 5-10, well supported by vice-captain Andy Stannard with 2-22.

l In a Sunday league encounter, Bewdley proved no match for neighbouring KVCC 2nds, and were beaten by 204 runs.

Alex Roden led the way for KVCC with 153, helping put on 180 for the second wicket with Andrew Kimberlin 71. Aidan Laverty was the pick of the home bowling, with 4-59.

Chasing 326 in 45 overs became even more difficult when Steve Brown was bowled first ball. Richie Harris and David Mills put on 56 for the second wicket to give the score some respectability. When they went it was left to Moses to hold things together and see the score to 122-8 in the 45 overs. He finished on 48not out.

KVCC 326, Bewdley 122-8.

Kidderminster Victoria and Cookley

KVCC's county league firsts enjoyed a mixed weekend in Division Two bouncing back from a losing draw at Cookley with a home victory over Hagley.

Against Hagley, KVCC batted well to recover from a poor start to reach 202-9. Mark Venross held the innings together with 68, receiving good support from Paul Edwards 26 and Andy Kimberlin 23.

With the ball, Venros was again the star, taking 5-75. Young fast bowler Steve Yarsley picked up three wickets for a Bank Holiday weekend haul of seven.

Hagley finished 191 all out giving KVCC a welcome 24 points. The victory was particularly pleasing given KVCC's off day against struggling Cookley two days earlier.

In fact, Cookley would have been clebrating their first win of the season had they managed to dislodge KVCC's last pair.

Bowling first, KVCC could not prevent Cookley from reaching 221-9, although Yarsley again impressed with 4-55.

Cookley's Kiwi John Blakely (60) and Gary Mills (45) did most of the damage with the bat.

In reply, KVCC were soon in trouble with five wickets going down before they had reached 50. Mills was the pick of the Cookley bowlers with 6-51.

Good lower order batting from Kevin Amos 45 not out and Craig Siwicki 36 was the difference between defeat and a losing draw for KVCC who made 168 -9.

l Cookley had another close call at Bromyard on Monday after restricting the home side to just 167 with Ian Goodman turning in 4-52.

It looked plain sailing for Cookley at one stage once skipper Adam Nicholls (75) and his brother Stuart(31) were in full flow but a collapse followed and the visitors finished eight runs short of their target on 160.

The match was dominated though by Bromyard's Pakistani import Saeed who completed a fine day with 56 and 9-28.

l KVCC's seconds beat Cookley seconds in Division Two 2nd XI on Saturday.

KVCC were put in to bat and made 191-9.

In reply Cookley were all out for 181, with Michael Wardle taking three wickets, Robert Webb and James Rine two, and Phil Pountney one and Tony Burkes one each, to give KVCC 24 points to Cookley's seven.

On Monday KVCC seconds faced Hagley and were beaten by two wickets.

KVCC notched up 184, with Amrik Singh 31, Wardle 34 and Norman Lamb 37 the top batsmen.

In reply Hagley made a good start being 111-2 from 22 overs, until captain Burkes came and slowed down the run rate.

Singh took three wickets, Webb and Burkes were also successful, but Hagley ran out winners.

On Monday Cookley seconds had to be content with a losing draw at home to Bromyard.

l Paul Edwards starred with the bat and Matthew Brace with the ball as KVCC county league thirds comfortably overcame Old Hill in Division Six.

Electing to bat the KVCC openers went cheaply but Edwards' magnificent 112 and Simon Trickett's excellent 49 set about the Old Hill bowling with some superb shots to all points of the small ground.

Andy Logan continued to dominate and notched up an impressive 71 not out and Richard Eyers 35 finished KVCC on 323.

Brace opened the bowling and immediately took control with a very mature and intelligent spell of offspin that gave him figures of six wickets for 10 runs off 10 overs.

Lee Daniels 2-32 and Oliver Sewell 2-18 completed an excellent all round team performance.

However, a ninth wicket stand of 44 between Meese and Steve Breakwell, in just five overs, helped Chainwire to a respectable 179-8.

In reply, Highley's openers suffered some early scares, but Chainwire's opening bowlers, S Beasley 0-30 and Meeses 1-38 had no luck, and Highley's batsmen eventually took control, with N Humphries 47, S Humphries 47no and M Stede 42 steering Highley comfortably home with 10 overs to spare.
