WHAT a pleasure it was to read in Worcester News (Saturday, May 14) that war veteran and President of Worcester Branch of the Royal British Legion John Hewlett had been honoured with an invitation to lunch with his wife Betty at Buckingham Palace.

I am delighted for John, a man who has dedicated himself selflessly to the service of the Royal British Legion.

His work alone for Poppy Day is legendary. He is the most honourable of men and the only thing I'm surprised about is how this fine citizen of Worcester has not graced the Honours List. I urge Mr Mike Foster our MP to use every power available to him to help rectify this dreadful omission.

No one deserves an honour more than John, a man who is certainly an inspiration to me at least. His presence alone at laying of wreath's on Remembrance Sunday always made me feel important as a macebearer for my beloved city of adoption.

Have a great day at the Palace John - and may God bless all your future efforts.

SEAMUS KELLY,

Worcester.
