DAVID Harrison took three wickets in five balls as Glamorgan took the totesport League Division One honours against Worcestershire at Sophia Gardens last night.

The 53-run victory was the perfect way for Glamorgan to christen their new £275,000 permanent floodlights, especially as they had lost their previous five matches in all competitions.

Worcestershire had made a good start in their pursuit of 228 to win.

David Hemp had guided Glamorgan to the challenging total, reaching 35 without loss within five overs with Vikram Solanki going on the attack.

But they crashed to 40-4 thanks mainly to Harrison's fifth over which saw him rip out three wickets including the key wicket of Graeme Hick, who was caught behind.

There was a brief recovery from Worcestershire's overseas pair of Zander de Bruyn (50 in 80 balls) and Chaminda Vaas in an alliance worth 41.

But after Vaas was bowled by Darren Thomas and de Bruyn brilliantly run out by Dean Cosker, there was only one winner.

It was left to Harrison to take the last two wickets to claim a five-wicket haul as Worcestershire were bowled out with 4.2 overs left.

The defending champions had been indebted to David Hemp with an unbeaten 65 as he guided his team from a sticky mid-innings collapse to 227 all out.

After winning the toss Glamorgan, who were without Sourav Ganguly despite the India captain signing this week, got off to an encouraging start with Robert Croft and Matthew Elliott putting on 79 for the first wicket in 16 overs.

But Croft's wicket heralded a collapse -- a symptom of Glamorgan's season -- as they went from 79 without loss to 137-5.

Much had depended on Elliott but he then played on to Kabir Ali and the middle-innings slump continued with Ian Thomas, Michael Powell and Mark Wallace all dismissed in the space of nine overs. But Hemp stopped the rot in a profitable 49-run partnership with Richard Grant in 10 overs.

Worcestershire, meanwhile, make a swift return to totesport action on Monday when they aim to take revenge on Middlesex at New Road.

The Crusaders, currently leading the way in Division One, gained the upper hand over the Royals earlier this month when sneaking a three-wicket victory at Lord's.
