100 years ago

SiR Richard Harington, Malvern County Court Judge, was 70 years old on Saturday. A barrister of 1858, he has been a county court judge for 33 years, has been a metropolitan magistrate at Hammersmith and Wandsworth, is the father of Mr Justice Harington, of the Calcutta High Court, and is descendent of the Puritan Judge Sir James Harington, who formed one of the tribunal which tried and condemned Charles the First. The townspeople of Ledbury gave a right hearty welcome to the officers and men of the Queen's Own Worcestershire Hussars Imperial Yeomanry, when they arrived in town. The town looked quite gay, High Street and the Homend being a blaze of colour, with flags and bannerettes, while at Upper Cross, a streamer of flags ran from Miss Proctor's to Mr Hampton's. Mr A A Broatch, the well-known breeder of Hereford cattle, of Woodside, Welland, Malvern, said at Hereford on Monday that his prizewinning bull, Woodside Impact, which he sold to an Argentinian breeder for 1,500 guineas, was wanted soon after by an American breeder who offered £7,000. Four hundred children from local schools took part in the Ledbury Area Festival in connection with the Herefordshire Church Schools' Music Festival, at Canon Frome County Secondary School. The final item, "Singing Together", was impressive, with 400 children's voices. Ledbury Reporter, May 27, 1955.

Children from Madresfield CE School have raised money to restore the inscription on the church lychgate. As part of their project for the Worcester Diocese 13th centenary celebrations, they succeeded in raising over £70 with a sponsored spell-in. The extra money will be donated to the tower restoration fund. At a special service to bells the inscription, attended by parents, pupils and staff, the rector, Canon H Francis Atkins, thanked the children for their efforts. Malvern Gazette, May 29, 1980.

More talks, including a site visit by county councillors, are to be held between the county planning, highways, property and education departments, before a decision is taken on whether or not to proceed with the Longacres site, for the proposed new Ledbury Primary School.
