IT would seem from his comments (Letters, Thursday, May 19) that D E Margrett, in common with Malcolm Glazer, does not know his Soccerball from his elbow, not to mention simple business rules.

To suggest that the Government should (or could) intervene in the takeover of Manchester United is clearly ridiculous.

Glazer has just acquired a business plain and simple. If he is looking for someone to blame he could start with the former owner/chairman Martin Edwards who, after trying several times to sell the company privately and in the process quietly dropping the words football and club from the company name and Logo, floated the whole thing on the stock exchange and converted to a plc. Now, once you start to swim in that particular pond you then become prey to any shark with big enough teeth to gobble you up, which is exactly what has happened.

Neither Tony Blair, George Bush or even Nelson Mandela could or would want to get involved, as long as Stock Exchange regulations have been correctly followed, which seems to be the case.

Fans of most other clubs of course are finding the whole affair hilarious. Witness the amount of Stars and Stripes flags displayed by the Arsenal crowd at last Saturday's FA Cup final.

We shall look forward to next season and our first visit from the "Salford Quay's Pirates" and maybe a return trip to the "McTrafford Soccerball Bowl" to enjoy a Supersize Corndog and Cola bucket which will surely replace the traditional half time pie and bovril.

COLIN JONES,

Constance Road,

n IS there really a person called N Taylor or is this someone in the Worcester News offices filling up space?

Either way, banging on about proportional representation day after day after day will not persuade me that handing the balance of power to a right-wing tiny minority is the way forward.

HEATHER TIMNEY,

Malvern Link.
