WORCESTER Warriors have continued their summer shopping spree by landing Ed O'Donoghue.

The Northampton forward, who can cover both lock and blindside spots, has signed a one-year deal at Sixways.

O'Donoghue came to the Warriors' attention when they were watching signing Shane Drahm at Franklin's Gardens last season and director of rugby John Brain believes the 22-year-old is a big prospect.

"He's big, athletic and an aggressive player," said Brain.

"Ed is good in the line-out and has played a lot at number four. He's capable of covering for Craig Gillies plus he's an all-round forward who can also play in the back row.

"He's a young, hungry guy and has been frustrated at his lack of first team opportunities at Northampton."

The English-born forward made just four appearances for the Saints last season, but Worcester believe that he should have seen more action. Brain also revealed that new fly-half Shane Drahm is a big fan of O'Donoghue.

"We spoke to Shane about Ed when we signed him and he cannot believe that he's played so little this season," added Brain.

"When we were watching Northampton last season, this guy came on and made a big impact. I think he has the potential to be a good signing for us."

O'Donoghue is Worcester's sixth signing for next season following the captures of Drahm, Andy Gomarsall, Chris Fortey, Nicolas Le Roux and Emiliano Bergamaschi.

Meanwhile, Clive Stuart-Smith has moved to Llanelli Scarlets after being told he had no future at Sixways.

The scrum-half, who joined the Warriors in the summer from Leeds, struggled to shift Matt Powell from the nine jersey and once Worcester signed Gomarsall from Gloucester, the writing was on the wall for the former England Under 21 skipper.

"Clive is an outstanding young prospect whose career has stalled somewhat in the last season at Worcester," said Scarlets chief executive Stuart Gallacher.

"With Dwayne Peel away with the Lions and on international duty, Clive will be very much involved in the first team."

"Clive has been a little unfortunate," said Brain. "It's not worked out for him here at Worcester but we wish him all the best for the future."
