YOUNGSTERS from two primary schools have successfully tested out a new method of travelling to school.

As part of this week's national Walk to School Week the pupils from Oldbury Park Primary School, off Oldbury Road, St John's and Claines Primary off School Bank, Claines, tested the Walking Bus initiative where volunteers collected pupils and parents up from various points to walk to their schools.

"It was fantastic. We had a really good turnout," said Oldbury Park Primary School teacher David Willetts following yesterday's trial.

"I will send a letter to parents and ask if people would volunteer to run it for a few days a week."

A travel plan has been put together by the school and the county council.

"Part of the plan is to reduce the number of car journeys to school and increase the awareness of parents and children of walking in terms of health, as well as the social benefits of children talking to friends before they get to school," added Mr Willetts.

Pupils from Claines Primary School, in School Bank, made their walk, which started on Cornmeadow Road at the junction with Meadow Road, on Wednesday.

"It was brilliant," said headteacher Pam Clement. "We are running the scheme every Wednesday."

She added that the school is now considering running another route from Danes Green, near Fernill Heath.
