CRUCIAL talks aimed at averting a 48-hour strike by thousands of BBC journalists and technicians will be held today, with union leaders hoping for a compromise over controversial plans to axe almost 4,000 jobs.

TV and radio programmes were hit by a 24-hour walkout on Monday and there is expected to be further disruption next Tuesday and Wednesday unless the deadlock is broken.

Officials of the National Union of Journalists, Bectu and Amicus will meet BBC officials at the offices of the conciliation service Acas.

Tony Studd, national conciliator at Acas, will chair the talks and seek to reach a breakthrough to the row over jobs.
