DAVE Boddy is promising more summer signings at Worcester City following the arrival of top target Chris Smith.

The confident 23-year-old defender checked in at St George's Lane on a free transfer from Stafford Rangers and vowed to become a promotion-winner with Andy Preece's side.

Chairman Boddy believes the capture of Smith represents a major coup and admits two additional players will join the centre-half at Worcester.

"I would hope that we would put another couple of signings on top of Chris," said Boddy. "I always thought the best we could do this summer would be three signings.

"Andy's working hard at that at the moment and has got lots of options.

But as a good manager, he's not diving in. He's waiting for the right people, he knows what he wants and waiting for that person to come along.

"Chris was Andy's number one signing.

"When you get that key signing, it's a very important part of the team-building process. I think Chris is possibly one of the best- kept secrets in non-league football."

Derby-based Smith, who made 96 appearances for York City, is touted for a future return to Football League action and courted the attention of Rushden and Diamonds in February this year.

But the former Leeds United schoolboy is setting his sights on success with City and believes the chance to win trophies is just around the corner.

"I would not have signed if I did not believe Worcester could go up," insisted Smith. "I didn't sign just to stay in this league.

"I believe the club can get promoted. If I play to the best of my ability and the team does too, then we've got a very good chance of going up next season.

"I'm pleased to be here. Everybody on the non-league circuit knows Worcester is a big club and that's what attracted me."
