MERMAIDS and mariners will float by as the carnival comes to town and Pershore is transformed into a coastal resort.

Bank Holiday Monday's event, with a nautical theme will provide fun for all the family, with a lively parade through the town, accompanied by marching bands and a steam engine.

Chairman Dave Shaw is thrilled with the excitement for the event.

"The Pershore-on-Sea theme is designed to be as broad as possible with plenty of scope for people to use their imagination," he said.

"We hope to see as many people as possible get dressed up and join in.

"All we need now is great weather to make sure it is a truly memorable day."

Abbey Park will be the venue for the day's activities, with stalls, games, a dog show, fairground rides and classic cars. Cash prizes will be up for grabs for the best group and individual fancy dress.

Organisers had a tough job choosing a carnival princess.

Dozens of entries were sent in, but little Grace Oldfield fought off the competition.

The eight-year-old's dreams will come true when she becomes a princess for the day and lead the procession around the town.

"The pictures sent in were all wonderful," said Mr Shaw.

"It was great to see such enthusiasm for the carnival."

Grace will be joined by her eight-year-old attendants, Ellie Cavilla and Courtney Way.

The procession will leave the Brandy Cask riverside gardens in Bridge Street at 1pm, before moving along the High Street and Church Street to Abbey Park.

Other attractions include the first Asparagus Farmers Market in Broad Street, between 10am and 3pm and an open day at the Fire Station.

Anyone who wants to be involved in the parade must be at the Brandy Cask before 12.30pm.
