NEW Trade and Industry Secretary Alan Johnson will today make his first visit to the West Midlands since his appointment on a fact finding mission in the aftermath of the MG Rover crisis.

The minister will meet members of the Rover Task Force as well as companies affected by the collapse of the carmaker.

He will also assess efforts being made to help thousands of ex-Rover workers find new jobs.

The visit came as administrators continued to study offers from three firms to buy the sports car side of MG Rover and two groups interested in buying the rest of the business.

Dixons rapped

DIXONS Group plc has been criticised for the second time in less than a year over its Press adverts for discounted goods.

The retailer's ads for some cut-price items available at Dixons, Currys and PC World were misleading, the Advertising Standards Authority found.

Discounts available on certain electrical goods were not based on the latest in-store or website prices, the industry watchdog said.

No pensions

BRITONS are heading for a bleak retirement as people fail to save enough for when they stop work, research showed. As the number of people in contribution schemes overtakes those in final salary schemes, 29 per cent of workers admit they do not belong to a company pension scheme at all.
