I REFER to Mike Eaves topical letter concerning the Artrix.

Whilst I agree with much of what Mike says, I would like to make a point. Despite all the teething problems, budget restraints and the somewhat unimaginative external appearance, Bromsgrove now has its own theatre. This is an exciting achievement in its own right and shouldn't be underestimated. It presents an opportunity to be grasped!

For the theatre to become a success, however, and an established institution of the town, it must be supported by the people of Bromsgrove. The obvious way, here, is for people to go and see some of the events and productions (which must be imaginative, exciting, varied, and to a high standard).

Additionally, however, there must be plenty of opportunity for people in all walks of life and of all ages to actually be involved in those productions. Mike is right when he refers to "audiences of a certain age, status and clique." Here is a real danger, that the new theatre serves relatively narrow minority interests rather than pro-actively seeking ways to widen participation.

All & Sundry, Bromsgrove's new theatrical group, aims to drive that widening participation. It is one of our objectives to involve as many people as possible (of all ages and backgrounds) in the group's productions and activities. In a couple of weeks time, we are performing the musical The Pied Piper, a show that has a cast of almost 40 people, ranging in age from 10 to over 60 and including three people in wheelchairs (and this excludes all the other contributors, from director to ushers and leaflet distributors). Later in the year we will be doing Arsenic and Old Lace, and next year we plan to do four productions, including an old time variety show, an Alan Ayckborne play, Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew and, towards Christmas, the pantomime Cinderella. All of this, however, can only be achieved if we can generate the support of people in Bromsgrove.

Yes, the Artrix is presently lacking in some respects, but the vision is to overcome the problems and look to the future. So here is an invitation. In the first instance, come and see The Pied Piper - an exciting and lively show, with much humour and drama (tickets are available from the Bromsgrove Tourist Office - we have intentionally kept prices low in order to encourage people to come and see it). But also, if you would like to take part in the big adventure of making the Artrix a tour de force in the area, do come and join us. Telephone 0121 445 4065 for more details, or visit our web site on allandsundry.org We look forward very much to seeing you!
