AT a recent council meeting I raised the issue of the provision of either free or refundable car parking charges for those using either the fitness facilities at the Dolphin Centre or the Customer Service Centre. This was an issue that was raised with me on the doorstep during the election.

Residents, in particular former MG Rover employees, mentioned how they considered it an insult to turn up at the advice centre, emotionally at a very low ebb, seeking advice on retaining possibilities or indeed possible job vacancies, mortgage problems etc, and to be expected to park whilst advice was being sought.

I was assured by the appropriate cabinet member, during the debate, that the matter had either been discussed by the cabinet or was implemented last February. As a result of that assurance I visited the Dolphin Centre, and there was no evidence of free car parking spaces for the users of the advice centre.

There were no notices advising users of the swimming and fitness facilities that they are entitled to a refund, having just paid the full fee. Another point mentioned was that if and when the 'free' or refundable parking facility is provided there will be a limit of 20 minutes.

Many of the former MG Rover employees have very complex problems which, involve a variety of issues, and clearly a 20-minute session with an advisor may not be enough. Are we going to end up with a situation when customers of the advice centre will be expected to keep popping out and feed the parking meters?
