MICHAEL Pardoe and Alex Strutt took the honours at Drotiwich Amateur Boxing Club's entertaining tournament at the Stoke Prior Sports and Country Club.

Welterweight Pardoe, 18, faced the experienced Martin Gordon (Lions, Dudley) in his first contest for a year.

Despite a seven-year age gap and Gordon's experience at the highest level, Pardoe immediately took the initiative and kept up the pressure throughout the three rounds.

His body punching was especially punishing and took him to a clear and famous victory.

Equally remarkable was the outstanding display by novice middleweight Strutt, 22, who out-pointed Tudorville's Alec McCready.

McCready, a national novice finalist last year, had been due to box Droitwich's experienced Matt Greening, also back after a year's lay-off. But Greening strained his ankle and had to withdraw. Strutt's original opponent had also withdrawn.

Strutt looked the more experienced and accomplished, giving an outstanding and powerful display for a clear points win.

Light heavyweight Dave Jenvey, 20, almost made it an unlikely treble for Droitwich's senior squad when he all but turned the tables on Aston's James Ingram who had beaten Jenvey two months previously.

Ingram was more stylish and landed crisper punches, but Jenvey came back time after time and connected with heavier shots.

In an exciting and bruising contest, Jenvey looked to have done enough, but a narrow decision went Ingram's way.

Among the juniors on show, 16-year-old Sam Gorman, who has not boxed for three years, was edged out by Swindon's Ben Smith.

Fifteen-year-old Michael Mongan continued his recent form with an emphatic points win over Bridgewater's Keith Hawkins.

Tom Green, 15, was narrowly beaten by Phil White (Bream), despite conceding weight and experience.

Jordan Fox, 11, showed plenty of promise before being hustled out by Gloucester's Luke Carter.

Coach Chris Andrews was full of praise for his boxers.

He said: "Pardoe, Strutt and Jenvey in particular made this a truly memorable end-of-season show. If we can maintain this squad into next season we will be a formidable force in amateur boxing.

"My main regret was that so many of our talented squad did not get on.

"Matt Greening injured his ankle and Anthony Bonehill and Robin McDermott both had their opponents pulled out on the night by the official-in-charge."
