In the report on the planning application from Kanes Foods, which was passed with numerous conditions, Wychavon's Development Control Committee apparently admitted that the application contravened its own planning policies.

You would expect under those circumstances that the application would have been refused. Unfortunately the committee is made up of politicians who passed the buck to the Secretary of State instead of acting for the clear majority of local people who oppose the expansion plan.

Apparently the old argument about the economic benefits of the scheme outweighing any drawbacks was wheeled out again. Local growers are said to depend on the new facility as if it would be impossible to take their produce to some other place such as Vale Park.

So to page 15 of last week's Journal. There is a picture of a family of travellers who have rightly been moved from land they own because they broke planning rules. We applauded Wychavon's stand on this matter because most of us follow the rules and people who don't should not be allowed to get away with it. However if it is Kanes Foods, who have applied legally for permission to expand, then the council is happy to break its own planning rules for them. Who I wonder is going to take Wychavon to the High Court on our behalf?
