Redditch Council gym fees for students are to rise in June - sparking outrage from one user and the possibility she might even quit.

Students who use Arrow Vale Sports Centre received a letter informing them fees were rising from £11 to £15 a month.

Jenny Mole, 19, of Winyates Green, said: "I have always felt incredibly positive towards the £11 a month, especially as I'm a student who doesn't have a lot of cash.

"At first glance a £4 increase does not seem much, but it's about a 40 per cent increase, which I don't think is small.

"The decision is surprising considering the council's ideas of keeping Redditch fit at an affordable price.

"I'm almost certain I'll have to quit as this extra cost will prove too much with all the other commitments I have."

The fees are due to rise from June 1 but council sports services manager Dave Wheeler said they would still be the cheapest around.

Mr Wheeler said: "The cost of our student fitness suite membership has only increased minimally in three years, despite rising operating costs.

"We've also incorporated additional benefits to the student membership package, such as free swimming, yoga and squash at selected times.

"The fitness suite at Arrow Vale is subject to a profit share scheme with an independent commercial company, which means the council is unable to subsidise its prices, as with other activities run solely by us."
