ALLAN Benbow and Steve Worrallo smashed the record for the longest rally at Droitwich Tennis Club on Saturday and wrote their names into the Guinness Book of World Records.

The duo surpassed the previous record set by a German duo by playing 24,966 shots.

They also set the record in a speedy seven hours in front of a hundred strong crowd.

Worrallo said: "Once we started Allan and I didn't stop.

"We're delighted to have our names in the book of world records."

The duo's preparations for the attempt were thrown into turmoil after the original target set by an American pairing, over 17,000, was surpassed by a German duo a month before their record attempt.

Worrallo said: "Allan and I had been nearing the 17,000 mark so we weren't too worried about the new target.

"Once you get to nearly 20,000 there's not that much difference."

To make sure that the record attempt was official Benbow and Worrallo were videotaped on either side

They also went through 18 shot counters in their attempt.

Worrallo joked: "We wore the people counting our shots out but we kept going."

Amidst the record breaking Droitwich tennis club held a funday, which encouraged young and old to sign up for the club.

Juniors were given a taste of the sport with coaching sessions, while adults could test their mettle against the speed gun.

Worrallo said: "The whole day was a great success and the new record was just the icing on the cake."
