THE Worcester branch of the Samaritans was due to welcome city MP Mike Foster to its branch in Sansome Place today.

Mr Foster was to tour the centre, which fields an average of 13,000 calls a year from members of the public who need a sympathetic ear.

Samaritans spokesman Michael, who only goes by his first name to maintain anonymity, said Mr Foster would hear how the work of the Samaritans in Worcester had become ever more vital since it was set up in 1963.

"We now have around 100 volunteers who act as emotional support and a lifeline," he said.

"E-mails also now form a major part of our work

- which is surprising to many people, but a lot of people prefer to make contact that way.

"The Samaritans have played a large part in Worcester life down the years and it's important this continues to be recognised."

Anybody who wants to volunteer should call 01905 21121.
