LOOKING to use their judo skills in a different sport, four junior competitors from Kidderminster's Samurai Judo Club took part in the British Open Kurash (Russian wrestling) Championships and came home with four international medals.

First to fight was Lottie Millington who, unfortunately, had to fight two weight groups above her own. However, she walked into the finals with ease only losing the gold to a much more experienced Kurash player.

The two boys out of the group, Ben Newbury and Ryan Pitcock, competed in the heavy weight boys category. They buried all their opponents with maximum point scores until they met in the final with Newbury coming out on top and Pitcock settling for silver.

The last player to fight was Amy Millington who fought off all of her opponents to gain a place in the finals. Again she was beaten by a more experienced opponent and had to make do with silver.

Hot on the heels of that success, the club made a triumphant return to what they do best, judo, with three bronze trophies and a good performance at the Bristol Classic Junior Open.

L Millington, back in her own weight group, gave a tremendous performance but was over-powered by much stronger players.

Her sister A Millington missed out on getting into her usual weight group so had to compete in the open weight group, coming up against players at least 30kgs heavier.

She did not let that dampen her spirits and was thrilled to clinch a bronze medal.

The boys did not want to be outshone by the girls and despite a shoulder injury, Newbury fought his way to a bronze.

Pitcock seemed ahead of most of his opponents but missed out on a silver by a low score and also had to settle for bronze.

Two Wyre Forest karate stars were among a trio that triumphed at the All British Children's Championships at Brierly Hill in Dudley.

Stourport's Jenny Price and Adam Ziubrzynski teamed up with Gemma Wilson from Sedgely to take silver in the under-18 years kata event.

The trio, who are all blackbelts, are members of the Dudley Shukokai Karate Club under the guidance of Sensei Mandie Read.
