SCORES of motorbikers will scramble to Red Marley Hill in Great Witley on Bank Holiday Monday for an annual event in memory of Len Vale-Onslow.

More than 130 riders are expected to arrive from across the country to take part in the climb first introduced by the legendary Birmingham bike shop owner.

The winner will be awarded the Vale Onslow Memorial Trophy in honour of Vale-Onslow, who died aged 103 last year.

He found the steep hill at Walgrove Farm 70 years ago and turned it into one of the most spectacular locations for motorcycle climb events.

Although the contest took a three-decade break from 1971 due to lack of interest it was reborn on a nearby hill in 2002 and was an instant success.

Riders on bikes ranging from pre-war to 1970 will do battle in fours this year thanks to the introduction of a moto-cross style drop starting gate.

As part of the event, a Pre-65 trial will takeplace on the surrounding hillsides on Sunday.

There will also be static displays of historic motorcycles, an auto jumble, plus a marquee with bar and refreshments.

Admission for spectators is £5 with under-16s free. Car parking and camping is also free of charge.

Among those taking part in the Red Marley challenge are local team Severn Bore Piling, featuring John and Paul Bennett, Kevin Taylor, Steve Chamberlain, Darren White and Carl Pope, who are from Kidderminster and Wolverley.
