FIREMEN were clearing up at their "devastated" Tenbury Wells base this morning after one of the two fire appliances was stolen and driven through the station's huge double doors.
A five-mile police chase then ensued before the vehicle was abandoned in a field near the Salway Arms, Woofferton.
Tenbury sub-officer David James said
" I got a message at about midnight saying one of our engines was missing," he added.
"To my shock and surprise when I arrived the scene, at the station was total devastation."
"These are not easy to drive but they are automatics and once you're in gear you can put your foot down."
The appliance, which was carrying 400 gallons of water plus all the usual fire-fighting kit, was towed back to Tenbury in the early hours, where it was stripped down and towed to Birmingham for repairs.
A replacement appliance is now at the station.
Police would like to hear from anyone who saw any part of the incident to call them on 08457 444 888, quoting 431S/230305 or 445S/230305
