POLICE have announced a crackdown on vehicle crime in north Worcestershire.

An increase in the number of vehicles being stolen and broken into in the north of the county has prompted police to step up patrols using beat officers, community support officers and neighbourhood wardens.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition checks will also be used, meaning officers using specialist equipment will scan the licence plates of passing vehicles and identify any which have been reported stolen.

Police are also stopping drivers of cars which appear to be particularly at risk from theft.

These may be vehicles that have been left insecure or with valuables on display.

"The majority of vehicle crime can be prevented with a few simple measures such as locking doors and closing windows - even if only leaving the vehicle for a few minutes - and then keeping the keys safe," said Acting Ch Insp Stacey Williamson.

"Other sensible measures include removing the stereo if possible, not leaving valuables, bags or coats on display, investing in an immobiliser or steering lock, and having the windows etched with the registration number."
